How to Do Yoga: A Beginner’s Guide to Yoga Exercises That Actually Work

Introduction

There’s no denying that yoga helps manage stress, increases flexibility, and even relieves backaches. However, if you’ve ever tried rolling out your mat only to realize that you have no idea how to proceed further, you should know that you’re not the only one who feels this way. The majority of individuals give up yoga in the first two weeks of practice not because it doesn’t provide results but because they don’t know how to approach it.

Here you will learn everything there is to know about yoga in terms of practical knowledge. You will learn about the right breathing techniques, yoga poses, yoga equipment that you require (and it’s surprisingly little), and the mistakes that everyone makes when they start doing yoga in the United States.

What Is Yoga?

How to Do Yoga: A Beginner’s Guide to Yoga Exercises That Actually Work

Short answer – It’s a practice that will make you feel good physically and mentally.

Yoga involves a combination of physical movement (exercise known as ‘asana’), breathing exercises (‘pranayama’) and focusing your mind. Not just a new practice popularized in India, there are several types of yoga including Hatha and Vinyasa yoga that offer people a chance to get in shape while relaxing!

Yoga doesn’t demand you have any special talents. All that’s required is willingness to move and listen to what your body needs.

Different styles can be found in US gyms & yoga studios:

| Style | Best For | Intensity |

Hatha Yoga – It's good for beginners, but has a slow pace. Vinyasa Yoga – It’s great because of its flow style and offers cardiovascular benefits. Yin Yoga – Great if you want some deep stretches and relaxing poses. Power Yoga – A strenuous practice that provides high intensity. Restorative – This one is rejuvenating.

For complete beginners, we’d suggest you start out by trying either Hatha or Vinyasa yoga for beginners.

How to Practice Yoga at Home: Instructions for Beginners

How to Do Yoga: A Beginner’s Guide to Yoga Exercises That Actually Work

You do not need to be a member of our group to practice Yoga at home with our structure because you will be practicing Yoga by yourself.

Step 1: Create the Right Environment

You will need a lot of space to stretch your body in all directions like a room that is about 6 feet by 4 feet. You will also need it to be pretty quiet.

If you have a Yoga Mat that's great or you can just use a Towel on the Carpet to practice Yoga.

Step 2: Make a Short Practice Schedule

I think it is better to practice Yoga for a short time like 15 to 20 minutes instead of sitting for a whole hour. This is because one of the ways to stop wanting to practice Yoga is to try to do too much at one time.

Step 3: Warm Up First

Before you try some of the Yoga poses you should do some neck rotations, shoulder rolls and sitting twists, for about 2 to 3 minutes to warm up your body for Yoga. This will help you get ready to practice Yoga.

Step 4: Breathing Should Come First and Then the Pose

Most beginners get caught up in worrying about their appearance while performing yoga poses.

I’ve often told students that taking even, deep breaths should be more important than getting a perfect pose right? If you’re taking breaths too fast you’re probably holding them!

Step 5: Always Finish Your Session Lying Down

Every practice will end with you lying on your back (Savasana) for between 3 to 5 mins.

It’s only when we’re lying down that our nervous system receives all the benefits of our practice.

The poses listed above are all taught in nearly every beginner’s class here in America (and they form the base of most advanced yoga practices).

Mountain Pose/Tadasana – You start here by standing straight and having your legs shoulder width apart. This pose teaches you how to be aware of your correct body posture.

Downward Facing Dog/Adho Mukha Svanasana –

Now comes the fun part where you get all your limbs stretched as you are placed into an upside down v-position. This pose works great to stretch out hamstring muscles, calves and your shoulders!

Child’s Pose/Balasana – If you need to take a break from some of those more strenuous poses, this one is perfect! Sit on the floor, then extend your arms forwards, and let your forehead hit the ground.

Cat-Cow Pose/Marjaryasana-Bitilasana- This pose moves you through alternate positions that arch and round your spine. Get yourself into a table top position on the floor, and work your way up with these two poses.

Warrior I & II/Virabhadrasana – These lunging poses will really put your legs to the test, and also give your balance a good workout.

Bridge Pose/Setu Bandhasana – This is one that gets me excited because it gives my lower back and gluteus muscles such a nice stretch and strength boost when I lay myself down and lift my hips off the ground!

Corpse Pose/Savasana – Last but definitely not least is this full body relaxing pose. As someone who has been working out non stop for months, this is always overlooked by beginner yogis. I’m not saying you won’t feel it when you first try this one, but once you do, I promise you’ll never forget how much of a stress relief Savasana can provide!

One of my favorites when practicing yoga - OUR BREATHING!

Check out these two simple breathing techniques for beginners 👇

• Diaphragmatic Breathing:

When you want to inhale, take breaths into your nose.

Make sure that your stomach fills up instead of your chest.

This will help you relax, slow your heart rate and lowers some hormones

• Ujjayi Breath (. Ocean Breath):

You will hear a sound that’s similar to the ocean waves. It’s the noise created by the vibration on your throat due to inhaling/exhaling air through your nose.

Many people tend to perform this breath while practicing vinyasa yoga. But all you really have to do is try just ONE of these breathing techniques for just 5 minutes everyday without performing any yoga pose.

After doing this for a week…you’ll notice how different you feel towards your stress level! Here are some amazing Yoga breathing techniques to get started: Diaphragmatic Breathing & Ujjayi Breath!

Common Beginner Yoga Errors (and Solution)✖✖✖

Error: Not breathing properly during exercises.

Reason: You are too focused on performing the pose correctly.

Solution: Try counting each breath aloud at the beginning.

Error: Competing with other students.

Reason: Studio atmosphere is too competitive.

Solution: Concentrate on your own spot, and use a wall to help with balance.

Error: Avoiding warm-up routines.

Reason: You just want to proceed to the workout itself.

Solution: Always begin from 2-3 minute easy physical activities.

Error: Working on hard and unstable surfaces.

Reason: You believe that any flat surface will do.

Solution: Buy a simple non-slip mat – it should be less than $30.

Error: Overworking yourself.

Reason: You are excited after the first workout.

Solution: Stick to short workouts for the first months – 15-20 minutes, 3 days per week.

Error: Disregarding signs of pain.

Reason: You work hard to become more flexible.

Solution: Stop everything at once if you experience any sharp pain, but not stretching sensation.

Most of the certified instructors agree that the worst mistake is forcing yourself in painful positions instead of modifying the pose to suit your body.
