The Morning Routine for Success: An Effective Workout Program That Actually Works

Are your mornings chaotic — hitting the snooze button, making coffee, scrolling, rushing out the door? You don’t lack self-discipline. You lack structure. A morning routine for success is not about getting up at 4:30 a.m. and meditating on a mountain top. A morning routine for success is about adding some simple, consistent steps that put you in the right mindset before your day tries to drag you off in all directions.

In this article, we will discuss how to create an effective morning routine based on physical activity, how the part about the workout is essential for success, and how to stick to the routine even during those times when life is hectic. You will find a sample routine, the most common errors in creating such a routine, and the answers to the most frequent questions on this topic.

Here’s Why Your Workout Has To Be First Thing in the Morning

The Morning Routine for Success: An Effective Workout Program That Actually Works

Short answer: If you’re going to make exercise stick, it absolutely needs to be part of your morning routine because that workout is the easiest habit for your day to gobble up once things get crazy. Plus, the after-effects cascade-better mood, better focus, better sleep-makes literally every other habit in your day flow smoothly.

Now, the hard-truth rationale:

- Willpower Is Highest In The Morning: Around 3 PM, after several hours of decision-making, there’s a very real chance your brain just doesn’t have the juice to persuade you into a strenuous workout. A morning workout sidesteps that altogether.

- It Harnesses Cortisol:

Your body is naturally programmed to spike cortisol in the morning to wake you up. Instead of letting this chemical fuel anxiety and lead to that classic 2 PM slump, the morning workout channels it positively into getting stuff done.

- Creates An “I Win” Feeling Before 8 AM:

The sense of accomplishment from finishing something challenging when the day hasn’t really started yet - it’s powerful. More importantly, morning exercisers reported feeling “in control” more often, and it had nothing to do with the length of their workouts, everything to do with following through.

And you don’t have to spend a full hour sweating; 15-25 minutes is more than enough.

For beginners - brisk walk/jog in their local neighborhood for 15-20 minutes.

Bodyweight Circuit Workout: Perform 3 rounds of the following exercises: Squats, Push-ups, Plank, Glutes Bridges.

For intermediate users - strength training workouts using Dumbbells or Resistance Bands on 3-4 days. Perform interval walk/jogging sessions as well to burn more calories and get good cardiovascular health.

For advanced fitness enthusiasts - complete the entire body strength workout routine. For example, perform “Push-Pull-Legs” split and do HIIT

workout circuit. HIIT Circuit Workout: 20 Seconds of Workout & 10 Second Rest – repeat 8 Rounds with 2-3 Different Exercises Repeated.

You don’t even need that gym membership! For most Americans all we really need is our YMCA membership, some resistance bands, or even just sidewalks and we can easily find ourselves getting started!

Common Mistakes that Ruin a Morning Routine

Start small – Go all-in on doing a morning routine that’s an hour and a half long? No way! That will lead to burnout in week two.

Check your phone – I know we live in a world where we need to constantly check our phone, but putting down emails/social media right away puts your brain into a reactionary state. It may help to keep your phone somewhere else when working on this routine (like in another room).

Use motivation instead of a trigger – I’m going to lay my running gear out here so that there are no decisions needed to be made about what I should wear tomorrow? I’m going to put my alarm clock in the other side of the room so I can’t sleep in?

Fail to connect it to the ‘why’ – The people who failed their morning routine didn’t connect it to something important to them…like how they want to spend more time energizing their kids/work/preparing for their run.

Think it’s all or nothing – If I messed up today, why start at all then?!

Tips for Making Your New Exercise Habit Stick for Good

Start Small: Instead of thinking “I need to do this”, tell yourself “I am going to spend ten minutes doing this.” It’s way better to walk ten minutes everyday than exercising forty-five minutes and never getting there.

Established Routines: Tell yourself “When I brush my teeth, I put myself into my exercise gears.” By associating your existing habits with new ones makes remembering easy and less complicated.

Visual Feedback: When you are working on goals, nothing motivates more than seeing progress. Even putting a little tick mark into the calendar creates a streak and gives motivation, as long as its not too obsessed!

Prep Work: If you have all the things prepared the night before, like lay down your workout gear, filled your water bottle, started your coffee maker with auto-startup, etc., then it reduces the efforts while transitioning from Bed to Exercise.

Give It Time: Most people quit by day four-seven because those days are the toughest times where nobody wants to wake up. So give it at least thirty days to get used and if possible wait longer!

Morning Workout Plan for Job Success: The Business Aspect

The Morning Routine for Success: An Effective Workout Program That Actually Works

For working individuals, an AM workout plan is associated with improvement in terms of work performance, including increased attention in morning meetings, reduced mid-afternoon fatigue, and more efficient stress management during busy weeks. Currently, many companies in the U.S. take that into consideration when implementing their wellness program; therefore, they may provide a financial contribution to the employee’s gym membership or have a fitness room on their premises for employees who exercise in the morning. If your employer offers such a wellness option, make use of it in your workout plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the morning routine that makes you successful?

You're probably doing a lot of stuff in the morning—maybe 10+ things—but make sure you've got those three things in there: Waking up around the same time each morning. Doing some sort of movement for your body. Getting some time to prep your day before jumping headfirst into emails/social media.

The thing about these habits, though, is they don't need to be earth shattering—they just need to be consistent!

How long should I work out? For optimal results in terms of your overall health, 15-30 minutes of moderate-intensity movement will typically provide plenty of benefit towards many of the outcomes you might hope to see from having a great AM workout, such as an improved mood, increased focus and energy throughout the day. Once you push past this window, anything beyond this point would likely be considered more beneficial if you had a specific fitness-oriented objective.

When is the best time to wake up in the morning to perform my routine?

This is actually far less important than ensuring consistency! Just figure out what waking-up time gives you a good nights' sleep (7-9 hours for most people), and aim to wake-up in the same hour of that each day.

I'm definitely not a morning person can I do this?

Chronotype dictates when we feel our best...but doesn't dictate how much will-power we have. As a night owl adjust your bedtime a few days with a little bit each night, till you start reaching that "earlier" desired wake up time and you'll find yourself adjusting...

Which workout time is better? Morning/Evening

There seems to be a pretty good correlation between doing morning workouts & long term adherence to a fitness program. Some studies point at superior performance in the evenings with specific types of training BUT again IF YOU CAN MAKE YOURSELF SHOW UP which is what we all usually manage to do in the mornings!

Closing Comments

The key, to doing things is not being strong willed. It is having a good plan. When you set up your morning in a way it is easy to make good choices.

So here are the things I think you should do:

Start every day by doing something

Do not let anything stop you from getting through the hour of the day like your phone.

Let this new habit prove itself to you over time.

Now if I am feeling really excited I will choose one part of the morning routine I talked about to try in the coming week. That is how you have a morning with your morning routine.
